Silchar-Lumding BG conversion project by March 2015

Haflong meet on BG a 'political gimmick'

SILCHAR, Jan 7: All Barak Youth Students’ Association (ABYSA) came down heavily on two ministers- Gautam Roy and Ajit Singh and the railway officials for changing the deadline of the completion of Silchar-Lumding BG conversion project to March 2015. The NF railways authorities announced new deadline yesterday following the meeting at Haflong with the two ministers and Lalit Mohan Sukhlavaidya, MP, Karimganj.

Addressing a press meet held here this evening, Baharul Islam, chief convener of ABYSA, said that the recent meeting of the elected representatives of Barak Valley with the contractors and railway authorities to discuss the Silchar-Lumding BG for its expeditious completion was “an eye-wash and a part of the continuous exercise of the politicians and bureaucrats to hoodwink the people of the valley”. He said that earlier Sushmita Dev, MLA and chairperson of Silchar Municipality Board, also had such visit to the tunnel number 10 and assured that the BG would be completed soon. Baharul added to say that the visits of political leaders to Haflong in the name of taking stock of the BG project were nothing but a “political gimmick”. He went on to say that the political leaders of the valley often carried out such exercises to safe guard the interest of the ABCI, the construction company engaged in the project.

Taking a dig at the ministers, he said that this was a diversionary tactics of the Congress government to keep the people in good humour on the eve of panchayat elections. He hit out at the elected representatives for playing politics with an important public cause. He demanded that the project should be completed by December 2014; otherwise they would launch massive mass movement across the valley. The date of completion was first fixed in 2011 to be extended to 2013 and then 2014 and now by March, 2015. Among others present at the press meet included Mustafa Ahmed Chowdhury, Sekhar Das, Amabhabo Das.
