Poaching of migratory birds in Silchar (Barak Valley)

Poaching of migratory birds in Silchar (Barak Valley)

With the arrival of winter, when the migratory birds have started coming to South Assam, the People’s Science Society along with SAFE, an environmental organization, have raised the issue of poaching of migratory birds and other wild life animals in the region.

Demanding immediate action against the poachers in the region, both the organizations have submitted a memorandum to the Conservator of Forest, Southern Assam Circle.
Krishanu Bhattacharjee, secretary of PSS, said that the Wild Life Protection Act seems to be inapplicable in South Assam as all kinds of animals and birds are being brutally killed by the poachers, forest village dwellers and even by common villagers. He said that though the reports of such killings of species have frequently been published in the different media outlets, no punitive action has ever taken by the authority concerned.
