Historical place of Latu or Malegar in Karimganj

APYC general secretary seeks CM's intervention

SILCHAR, Dec 20: Daiyan Hussain, general secretary, Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC), sought the intervention of the Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, to preserve the historical place of Latu or Malegarh, a border village in Karimganj district, where the battle for Sepoy Mutiny was fought in 1857. It was the battle ground of first war of independence of 1857 in north-east region where 26 brave souls of ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ laid down their lives fighting the British forces.

Recalling the historical event, Hussain, in a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, requested him to preserve this place where Indian soldiers fought with British and had killed British Major Byng and his five companions. During the battle, 28 mutineers were also killed who were later buried at a hillock called Malegarh Tilla of Latu, 15 km from Karimganj town.

Recounting the heroism and valour of the mutineers, Hussain pointed out despite all the odds, the Indian soldiers when encountered and charged by the British army fought back bravely.
