Beekshan Cine Commune's film festival evokes wide response

SILCHAR, Jan 8: The seven-day 15th annual film festival-2013 organized by Beekshan Cine Commune which began last evening has evoked wide response and appreciation from the lovers of classical and documentary films. Gandhi Bhavan auditorium, the venue of the event, has been drawing crowds and winning laurels for the organizer, well known for their aesthetic selections from the past and present.
Dr Kumar Kanti Das, renowned surgeon, who inaugurated the festival, in the midst of distinguished invitees and audience, said, “The initiative of the Beekshan Cine Commune of this town for the last 14 years has been remarkable to showcase before the admirers of best features and documentaries of the all time producers and directors of repute.” The inaugural programme began with a different note by holding candles in protest against the Delhi gang rape incident.
The uniqueness of the festival is that it is in 11 languages that has 19 features and eight short and documentary films from eight countries. The inaugural show began with the Bengali film Bhooter Bhabishyat directed by Anik Dutta and followed by French feature, The Woman Next Door, directed by F Truffaut. Second day of the festival presented Khamosh Pani directed by Sabiha Sumar, Charulata 2011, directed by Agnidev Chatterjee and Kannada film, Gulabi Talkies, directed by Girish Kasravalli.
Among the other feature films to be exhibited on the remaining days includes Frozen (Hindi, Ladakhi), Pan Sing Tomar (Hindi), The Eclipse (Italian), Gattu (Hindi), The Girl In Yellow Boots (English, Hindi), Laptop (Bengali), All About My Mother (Spanish), The Colour of Paradise (Persian), Runway (Bengali), Hemlock Society (Bengali), Ocean of an Old (Hindi, English, Bengali), Gosain Baganer Bhoot (Bengali), Abar Byomkesh (Bengali) and Chitrangada (Bengali). The short and documentary films which will be exhibited on Saturday next include Ramkinkar Baij, directed by Ritwik Ghatak, Shaking Tokyo, directed by Joon Ho Bong, Sikkim, directed by Satyajit Ray, Continuum, directed by Anand Gandhi and Khushoo Ranka, The Bypass, directed by Amit Gupta, Un Chien Andaloi, directed by Louis Bunnel and Nonadanga-Aro Ekti Ucched Prokolpo.
Kamal Chakraborty, president of Beekshan Cine Commune, said “Our objective behind holding of such film festival is to keep alive the tradition of best films which mirror the best and the artistic aspects of life.” He pointed out that though their effort has always been to show films in as many languages as possible, often it has not been positively responded. Still, despite certain discordant notes, they will continue with their endeavour. People love to see the classics on varied themes. The Beekshan Cine Commune has been trying to exhibit the best of all times every year.
