MPs, MLAs can be disqualified for shifting party-loyalty

SC Judgement removes legal hurdles

SILCHAR, Jan 21: The recent judgement of the Supreme Court for reigning in MPs and MLAs deserting their parent parties to join the other political parties has been hailed in civil and legal circles here. It has been a common phenomenon that apprehending backlash or jolt to the party in the event of an MP or MLA switching loyalty, the party dares not take action against him. Moreover, the inherent lacunae and the intricate process of the anti defection law has not come as a deterrent to the well known syndrome of aya ram, gaya ram politics. But, the judgement of the Apex Court has removed the glitch and legal hurdle in seeking their disqualification under anti defection law.
