Sadarghat Bridge, 'The Bridge of Sigh'

Barak Bridge, 'The Bridge of Sigh'

SILCHAR, Jan 20: There is no count of people leaping to their deaths from Sadarghat Bridge on river Barak that connects Manipur, Dima Hasao district and the airport, besides being a passage for the cluster of villages of Borkhola and Udharband constituencies of Cachar . It also provides link to NH 53 and NH 54, an access to Mizoram and Imphal. Besides being of strategic importance, it has been in perpetual trouble and a mute witness to the known and unknown committing suicides standing from the bridge during the 43 years of its existence. Gammon Company constructed in 1967, calling for frequent intervention of experts and engineers to rectify the technical faults. It is not for nothing that “Barak Bridge” has been called “The Bridge of Sigh”.
